Celebrating spring and agriculture at Morton County Ag Day

by Lisa Hauf, NDFB Director of Public Relations

It’s that wonderful time of year again when the sun shines a little brighter, the air smells a little fresher, and spring fever is in full swing! And what better way to embrace the season than by attending Morton County Ag Day, an annual event that’s fun for the whole family and also
educational.

For me, Morton County Ag Day holds a special place in my heart, as it brings back cherished memories of years past. I’ll never forget my oldest son, Evan’s, first time at Morton County Ag Day! He starred in a video capturing the magic of the event through a child’s eyes. His high-pitched scream as he held the baby chickens for the first time still echoes in my ears, reminding me of the pure joy of childhood innocence.

Now, I get to take my younger boys, Grayson and Jamison, to this fun event! Grayson, with his love for farming and ranching, finds comfort and fulfillment in caring for animals. He grew a love for cattle through his uncle Patrick, who takes him in the tractor to check on cows every time we visit the farm. During the summer months, I will often find Grayson outside gathering “hay” for the cattle that we must keep until we see his Uncle Patrick again.

On the other hand, Jamison’s passion lies in anything with a motor. From the roar of engines to the thrill of speed, he’s captivated by the world of machinery. Attending an agriculture event, where he can admire a variety of tractors and four-wheelers, is the perfect way for him to explore his interests.

But beyond the excitement and entertainment, events like Morton County Ag Day and many other events held by county Farm Bureaus across the state play a crucial role in educating our children about the importance of agriculture. From soil health to animal care, agriculture touches every aspect of our lives. By exposing our children to the wonders of farming and ranching, we open their eyes to the countless career opportunities available in the agricultural industry.

As warmer days begin to greet us, let us celebrate the beauty of spring and the vital role that agriculture plays in our lives.

(The 2024 Morton County Ag Day will be held May 1st in Mandan at Dacotah Centennial Park.)
